It is the main feature of Rara National Park, located in Jumla and Mugu Districts. Rara lake has been a popular destination with a very rough route in Western Nepal for trekkers. The glimpses of culture and scenery on the way are quite different from the rest of Nepal. Situated in high altitude, you can find the lake surrounded by Rara National Park with pine, spruce, and juniper forest. The view of snow-capped Himalayan peaks enhances the attraction of trekkers. The trek begins with the flight to Jumla (over an hour flight from Kathmandu) or from nearer Nepalgunj. Going along the mountain path and some villages one can reach the bank of Rara lake. The waters are so clear you can almost see the bottom. Many songs and poems speak of the beauty of this lake. One traveler described it as “a shimmering blue jewel set in a ring of snowy peaks”. The clear lake surface perfectly reflects the surrounding mountains and pine covered hillsides. The scenery is starkly different from that of the rest of Nepal. The Rara Lake trek is very much an ‘off the beaten path’ trek that allows for a unique and authentic Nepal trekking experience. Occupants of the area were resettled in 1976 when the Region became a National Park. Therefore, the Rara Lake trek is incredibly quiet as, except for the occasional soldier, no one lives there.
The Rara Lake trek is one of the best places in Nepal to see wildlife. There are potentially 20 species of mammal you could see – these include the ghoral and serow, of which few have heard; The Himalayan black bear; clouded leopard; musk deer and the rare red panda. There are 214 species of bird including the commonly-seen implying pheasant, the national bird of Nepal, and over 500 kinds of flower and herb.
Trekking Itinerary Days: The Rara lake Trek can be done for 6-7 days. the trekkers have to manage all the first Aids Medicines for them due to the lack of Hospital, good Hotels for Meal, Breakfast and warm clothes as well as the tent for them if they are not going by well Trekking Agency for the permit, itinerary and the packages for their trips.
During the winter months you will be able to witness the migratory birds from various countries around the world and during the summer months, Himalayan flowers surround the lake, creating a vibrant landscape.
The Climate weather for the Rara lake Trekking; Summer is quite pleasant but winter is cold. The best visiting time to the lake is September/October and April to May. From December to March, the temperatures go low below the freezing point, and heavy snowfall occur up to one meter, blocking the way to the lake.
