Trip Introduction

Island Peak Climbing - 19 Days: The Most Popular Trekking & Climbing Experience in Nepal

Island Peak (6,189 m / 20,305 ft), also known as Imja Tse, is one of the most famous trekking peaks located in Sagarmatha National Park. Named by the British Everest expedition group in 1953, it is a popular climbing destination for trekkers with basic mountaineering experience. Climbing permits must be obtained through the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). As a non-technical peak, Island Peak is accessible to most trekkers with good physical fitness, making it a well-known trekking peak.

At Nepal Trekking Tourism & Adventure (NETTA), we have over 25 years of experience organizing trekking and expedition services, led by local Sherpa guides from the Everest region. We offer two options for the Island Peak climbing trip in Nepal:

  1. Budget Island Peak Expedition: For those who wish to trek to Everest Base Camp independently but need support for the Island Peak summit, we provide a 4-day budget expedition package from Chhukung to Island Peak and back. Please note that climbing Island Peak without a permit and guide is illegal and may incur penalties under Nepalese law. Our package ensures that you have the necessary permits and a climbing Sherpa to help you achieve your dream summit.

  2. Comprehensive 19-Day Package: For a well-organized trek and Island Peak climbing trip, we highly recommend our 19-day package, which includes the Everest Base Camp trek. This itinerary allows for proper acclimatization before the summit attempt and provides ample opportunities to familiarize yourself with your climbing guide, who will share valuable climbing tips.

If youre interested in an even more ambitious adventure, we recommend our 25-day expedition that combines the summits of Lobuche Peak and Island Peak. This is an excellent option for those looking to take on larger mountain expeditions over 7,000 m.

Island Peak attracts thousands of climbers and trekkers to the Everest region annually, making it one of the most accessible climbing peaks in Nepal. NETTA is proud to have a 98% success rate for summiting Island Peak, having guided over 5,000 international climbers to the top of Imja Tse. This peak serves as an ideal starting point for aspiring mountaineers looking to tackle summits above 8,000 m.

Climbing Permits and Fees: The climbing permit for Island Peak must be obtained from the NMA through a government-registered local expedition agency like NETTA. The permit fees vary by season:

  • USD 70 (June to August & December to February)
  • USD 125 (September to November)
  • USD 250 (March to May)

These permit fees are included in our packages.

Trekking Itinerary: Our Island Peak Expedition begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, followed by the popular trekking route to Everest Base Camp and Kalapattar. After this trek, you will continue to Chhukung to start your climb. Most summits begin directly from Island Peak Base Camp, but depending on weather conditions and climber fitness, we may set up a High Camp for better acclimatization.

Our expert Sherpas are experienced, professional, and dedicated to ensuring a safe and successful summit experience.

Island Peak climbing is a combined adventure trip that includes trekking to Everest Base Camp and climbing Island Peak. This highly recommended three-week journey has become increasingly popular in Nepal, with the best months for climbing being October-November and March-May.
